Dietitians’ Association of Sri Lanka

Professional organization of Dietitians in Sri Lanka. It was established in 15th November 2012. Principal aims for which the Association is established are to:

  • Promote rights and interests of dietitians
  • Enhance professional competency of dietitians
  • Promote national health through advancement of nutrition and dietetics
  • Promote a culture of ethical conduct in the dietetic profession
  • Foster evidence – based practice for nutrition and dietetics
  • Promote healthy lifestyle and optimal nutritional status of Sri Lankans

What we do?
  • Establish entry level and full professional qualifications for the professions of dietetics and nutrition
  • Set standards and accredit programs of study in dietetics and nutrition
  • Maintain a framework for accrediting continuing practice as a dietitian
  • Promote excellence through a program of continuing professional development
  • Promote good practices in community and institutions through health and nutrition education, formulations of therapeutic diets, use of advances in clinical nutrition in practice and diet counselling
  • Form strategic alliances/partnerships with relevant stakeholders to advance nutrition and dietetics in Sri Lanka
  • Foster food and nutrition knowledge and skills across the community
  • Advocate for a safe and nutritious food supply in which community has confidence
  • Promote attitudes and environments conducive to the enjoyment of food
  • Foster the advancement of nutrition and dietetics internationally
How to become a qualified Dietitian

To become a qualified Dietitian in Sri Lanka you have to obtain following qualifications

  • Four years bachelor’s degree in dietetics, food and nutritional science or human nutrition from a recognized university (Notice by the Chairman, University grants Commission of Sri Lanka, 18 December 2008 ) accepted by the council.
or
  • Any biological or chemical science degree with 2 years Masters degree or above in relevant field which related to dietetics, human nutrition or food and nutritional sciences from a recognized university (Notice by the Chairman, University grants Commission of Sri Lanka, 18 December 2008 ) accepted by the council. Along with
  • At least 12 months of fulltime dietetic internship training in a clinical setting after graduation under a dietitian or a nutritionist whose qualifications are accepted by the council.
  • Professional certificate issued by Faculty of Medicine, University of Colombo.
  • Registration certificate issued by Sri Lanka Medical College council.
Who is a Dietitian?

A dietitian is a person with a qualification in nutrition and dietetics, recognized by national authority. The dietitian applies the science of nutrition to the feeding and education of individuals or group in health and disease. Theyare the only qualified health professionals that assess, diagnose and treat dietary and nutritional problems at an individual and wider public health level. They work with both healthy and sick people. Uniquely, dietitians use the most up-to-date public health and scientific research on food, health and disease which they translate into practical guidance to enable people to make appropriate lifestyle and food choices. Based on the place of work and specialization areas they obtained there are several categories of Dietitian as Clinical Dietitian, community Dietitian and Sport Dietitian. Based on the health service classification this profession has been classified as an allied health profession.

In Sri Lanka Title of the Dietitian is protected by Sri Lanka Medical ordinance Act.

Clinical Dietitian
Provide medical nutrition therapy for patients in institutions such as hospitals and nursing care facilities. They assess patients’ nutritional needs, develop and implement nutrition programs and evaluate and report the results. They confer with doctors and other health care professionals in order to coordinate medical and dietary needs. Some clinical dietitians specialize in the management of overweight and critically ill patients, such as those with renal (kidney) disease and diabetes. In addition, clinical dietitians in nursing care facilities, small hospitals, or correctional facilities may manage the food service department.In Sri Lanka mainly dietitians work in hospitals and clinics. Hence most of them are clinical dietitian.
Community Dietitian
Develop nutrition programs designed to prevent disease and promote health, targeting particular groups of people. Dietitians in this practice area may work in settings such as public health clinics, fitness centers, corporate wellness programs or home health agencies
Who is a nutritionist?
Nutritionists are qualified to provide information about food and healthy eating. Nutritionists work in different roles including public health, health improvement, health policy, local and national government, in the private sector, Non-Government Organizations (NGOs) and in education and research.
