FAQ

To become a qualified Dietitian in Sri Lanka you have to obtain following qualifications;

  • Four year special Degree in Dietetics, Food Science and Nutrition or Human Nutrition from a recognized university with 1 year dietetic internship under a Registered Dietitian

or

  • Four year Science Degree with a 2 year Master’s Degree in Food and Nutrition or Dietetics along with 1 year dietetic internship under a Registered
    Dietitian
  • Professional certificate issued by the Faculty of Medicine, University of Colombo
  • Registration with Sri Lanka Medical College council as a registered dietitian
Dietetic internship is a structured training to provide a comprehensive clinical and research based programs that prepare dietetics professionals for the career. Includes extensive opportunities for students to apply their theoretical knowledge to practice, to develop skills and competences to practice in the field of dietetics and nutrition and successfully complete to face challenging job market.
If you possess basic qualification (Bachelor’s degree or master’s degree) as mentioned under question number 01 you can obtain associate membership in DiASL. Then you can made your request for internship through Secretary of DiASL.

If you are a healthy individual and if you would further like to being healthy without getting complications like diabetes, obesity, dyslipidemia, fatty liver, hypertension or cancers

or

If you are a patient who are already suffering with following conditions:

  • Overweight and obese.
  • Under weight
  • Diabetes, gestational diabetes, hypertension, hypercholestremea, cardiovascular diseases and fatty liver
  • Gastro intestinal disorders like severe Gastritis,
  • Irritable bowel disorders, and inflammatory bowel disorders etc.
  • Liver, renal and other endocrine gland disorders (Eg: Pancreatitis, Cholecystitis etc.)
    Cancer patients
  • Pre and post-operative patients (Cardiac or Gastrointestinal surgery)

If food is taken carelessly without proper knowledge there is a risk of getting non communicable diseases like obesity, hypercholestremea, diabetes, hypertension and cancers or worsening the prevailing disease condition. So we are there to guide you on what to eat, how much to eat and when to eat in order to make you free from above complications and help you to obtain a healthy life based on your present nutritional status, clinical condition and personal preferences.
